Satin Spar (often sold as “selenite”) is is believed to be a powerful cleansing stone that clears negative energy, promotes peace and clarity of mind, protects the aura, and supports spiritual connection and higher guidance.
Formation:
Satin Spar is a fibrous variety of gypsum that forms in evaporite environments when salty water from seas or lakes evaporates, causing calcium and sulfate minerals to crystallize in parallel fibrous layers, giving it its silky, chatoyant appearance.
Cutting & Processing:
Satin Spar is very soft (Mohs 2), so it is cut and shaped using fine-toothed saws and grinders rather than heavy diamond tools. Rough material is trimmed into blocks, then carved into common shapes such as wands, towers, and spheres. Because it is fibrous and fragile, artisans work gently to avoid splitting along natural lines. Polishing is done with progressively finer abrasives, usually dry or with minimal water since gypsum can dissolve. Finished pieces may be lightly waxed or sealed to protect the silky sheen.
