Schorl, the black variety of tourmaline, is composed of sodium iron aluminum borosilicate (NaFe³⁺₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄). It is one of the most powerful protective stones, absorbing negative energy and shielding against electromagnetic radiation. Schorl forms in granite pegmatites and metamorphic rocks when boron-rich fluids interact with other minerals under high pressure. This process leads to the development of elongated, striated crystal formations that often grow in clusters. When mined, black tourmaline is typically left in its natural cluster form, with minimal processing beyond cleaning and trimming. Some specimens are lightly polished or cut into wands and points, but most are kept raw to preserve their powerful energy.
